We live in a fast-moving, ever-changing world full of beautiful and diverse faces.
Sault Ste. Marie is a part of this ever-changing world and we are proud to have such diversity in our city because it brings creativity, culture and encourages new businesses like our favourite Locked Up Escape Rooms, Giovani’s, Tandoori Garden and more! Diversity comes to us from a lot of different directions. Sault College and Algoma University bring us students from Africa, India, Mexico, Japan and many more. It is a beautiful part of our society here but there are more reasons people come to Canada than to learn.
Because we are so blessed here to have a safe place to live we believe it is also important to help others. As they say, if you have more than you need, build a bigger table.
Global Friends is a place for refugees and newcomers to Canada to celebrate diversity and become accustomed to our way of life. It is a place where people who both do and do not understand the English language are able to learn and grow in our community.
Global Friends is primarily run by volunteers who care about making newcomers’ experience in Sault Ste. Marie a pleasant one.
To have Global Friends in SSM is a big part of what keeps our newcomers feeling welcomed. When they can join Global Friends and celebrate their culture while still learning and celebrating ours it allows for a deeper connection to be made between people but programs like this are funded and to maintain them we, as a city, need to say this is a necessary part of our home and we want it to carry on!
It is a wonderful feeling when we meet people who have put their best efforts into learning about our culture, our homeland, and our language. It shows they care and it inspires us to learn about them as well, as we do with all our friends!
It is great to know that people feel welcomed in Sault Ste. Marie.
We provide a beautiful city in which we celebrate people from all over the world and that is an important focus in our city’s growth and encourages visitors that love to see pieces of themselves in the places they go.
To go to Algoma University and see Global Friends intakes performing traditional dances from their country warms our hearts. To know that the adults and youth who are apart of this organization are spending their time learning about camping, animals, local flora and fauna, participating in our local sports and visiting local small-time businesses is very exciting for us to see as an outgoing city that is in love with its many natural resources! We are proud of shared knowledge and experiences within our local community, we know that everyone deserves to grow and we love when they grow here! Now we are locally growing together thanks to the amazing efforts of Global Friends and we want to continue seeing this program make a positive impact in our community every day!
