voted the Sault Star Reader’s Choice Best Photographer of Sault Ste Marie for 2019. It’s not hard to see why, her passion for photography shines through when she speaks of the joy and fulfillment this hobby turned side business has brought to her.
Never dreaming her path would lead here, Meaghan Kent’s background is actually in writing and history, carrying two degrees including her Master of Arts in History from Western University and from Algoma University, her Bachelor of Arts Honors in History and English. By day, Meaghan works as a Communications Officer at Algoma University, though she’s currently on an extended maternity leave and enjoying time with her son. This has also allowed her to put more focus on building her business and pursuing her passion.
Like so many of life’s pursuits, Meaghan came to photography through happenstance. A number of years ago she started a tourism blog called The North Junction. She knew she needed to improve her photography in order to match her writing skills, and started from there. Water is a big element in many of her photos, and she professes a great love for Lake Superior.
It began as a hobby, and a way to get out of the house and meet people from all walks of life. As she settled into being a family and lifestyle photographer, Meaghan was blown away by the kindness and graciousness shown by the people of Sault Ste Marie. Her favorite part of her role is getting to laugh and celebrate with people while she documents the high points of their lives – new babies, weddings, she feels so lucky to be a part of it all. The niche she’s found as a wedding and newborn photography. She especially loves being able to watch new parents settle into their ‘new normal’ after such a big life change.
I asked what one of her favorite experiences has been so far, and she didn’t hesitate – it was being present in the courtroom as an adoption was finalized. At the time she was newly pregnant herself with her first child, and being able to watch another woman become a mother and document this new family was incredibly special and she holds this experience very close to her heart.
One of Meaghan’s biggest passions as a photographer is a project she focuses on every Remembrance Day. She takes great pride in welcoming veterans – from the Armed Forces, Navy, veterans of World War II, Afghanistan, and anyone else who’s served – into her studio for a professional portrait in their uniform, or with any medals or meaningful memorabilia they’d like to include, as a way to document for posterity and thank them for their service. She’s also packed up her studio and went to the home of anyone with mobility issues who can’t navigate the stairs leading to her basement studio. In addition to Meaghan‘s educational background in history inspiring her on this project, her husband Jason is a member of the Armed Forces and spent seven months abroad in Afghanistan. The Kents are big believers in thanking veterans for their service.
What does the future hold for Meaghan Kent Photography?
Meaghan plans to continue pursuing photography and running it as a successful side business. Being a new mother has really inspired her, as her son is always ready and available to act as her test subject and model. She has the support of the rest of her family behind her as well, with her mother stepping up to care for her son during her photoshoots. She also credits her husband for encouraging her to pursue her passion, as well as her father for currently helping renovate her basement studio to have a working bathroom – which she describes as a labor of love for his daughter – making it the perfect place for a newborn shoot or a cake smash.
When asked if there was anything she wanted to include, Meaghan wanted to say a heartfelt thank you to the people of Sault Ste Marie and the surrounding area for allowing her into their lives to capture their happiest moments, which is a pleasure she hopes to enjoy for many years to come!
