If you love one of a kind nick-nacks that can’t be found just anywhere, then maybe a walk downtown to Sault Ste. Marie’s Ole Warehouse Market will be just what your treasure hunting self was looking for.
Located by the waterfront and behind the Bush Plane Museum, you are sure to hear the sounds of boats passing by while you do your shopping. Up the stairs and through the doors from the parking lot are the sweetest vendors you have ever met in your life, waiting to chit chat and help you find your new treasures. The Market is run solely by volunteer vendors who often craft their own items, upcycle, remake and thrift. They believe that ethical shopping is not only important for the world we live in but that it also makes people happy to know that what they are buying is living another life rather than ending up in a landfill. Not to mention, some of the money made here stays local and often goes back into helping our community through donations to local charities, and some of the money goes to helping the vendors in overseas missions!
The Ole Warehouse Market first opened up in 2014.
There are a total of 11 vendors that work in the Ole Warehouse Market and others in conjoining shops throughout the building. Each carrying their own style; some handmade stuffed animals, others vintage plates and furniture, local artist’s paintings, candles, homemade soaps, jewelry, chain maille jewelry, different types of crafts, shabby-chic pickings, and supplies picked up on missions to Thailand. The vendors are often switching up their stock so you never really know what you will find when you walk into their stores as they keep the element of surprise going for their own entertainment and for that of their customers!
Vintage Cafe is another part of The Ole Warehouse Market that will warm your heart.
A cozy area where you can rest a while and enjoy coffee and treats that are often offered.
Many people visit the Market to shop but the atmosphere is so nice that there are often people who just pop by for a conversation and to enjoy the nostalgic beauty in the atmosphere.
“we know a lot of people by name, we have that kind of a connection with our customers” (judy, vendor at the market)
The beautiful people who run this shop are great believers in the power of reusing items again and again. They believe that Sault Ste. Marie is a strong and wonderful city full of community and natural beauty and that is part of why they have made this lovely shop for the locals and visitors to enjoy. It pays forward the joy they receive from SSM and encourages others to live a more environmentally friendly and positive life.
